Hmm...that does make sense to a certain extent...but even so everytime I read that line my inner 'Daniel sense' cringes... I enjoyed Continuum despite the things about it that irked me...I really enjoyed Daniel's circumstances...twisted huh?lol. So curious now...how do you spin that closing scene on the Tok'ra planet that has offended so many DV shippers?
Oh, Daniel's circumstances in Continuum are just pure awesome! Another hurdle he has to overcome, and you can SEE how hard it is for him to do it (which I think is a testament to how crucial his friends are to him, proved time and again).
And I really don't understand how that scene is offensive. I honestly thought it was VERY them - how Daniel just KNEW she would want to stay and how her "asking" him shows us that Vala feels Daniel's opinion matters. And the comment he gave to Teal'c was very true to form too b/c him and Vala AREN'T the perfect pair of people and they do get on each other's nerves and she's shown time and again how she can be downright annoying and stubborn. I loved that little ending scene b/c it spoke volumes for where their relationship came from and where it's going.
While I absolutely agree about him knowing that she would want to stay...but I'm curious as to what you think it says about their...um...developing relationship? I'm not in complete agreement with everyone else that he's being sarcastic and dismissive of her efforts...I tend to hear it more as he's making a comment that the 'host' is literally in for a tough afternoon because he's going to have come to terms with what he's done for the past 2000 years. I was actually more disappointed in his lack of compassion for the 'host'...if he can help Apophis's host die peacefully, then why wouldn't he help Ba'al's?...yeah, yeah...he's much more cynical now...but that underlying compassionate nature is still there. His lack of compassion for the 'host' was one of the things about Continuum that irked me.
See, this is always the difficult part for me - trying to express why I feel the way i feel about a certain scene! It's why I don't write metas! *snirk* But what it says about their developing relationship? Hmmmm, how to put it... there is a deep root of understanding tying them together, and despite all their disagreements and whatsuch, they will always understand each other and in turn know what the other will ultimately want. Kind of like with what Daniel has with Jack, except with Vala there is a romantic attraction. Yeah, I don't think that did my point justice, but I gave it a try!
As for his lack of compassion - that's interesting b/c I NEVER would have interpreted it that way. And it took me a few minutes to think out why I don't think that... I see Daniel knowing she would want to and letting Vala stay behind as his compassionate gesture to the host. With the case of Apophis, the host was dying - there was nothing that could be done for him. Seeing as the host was originally from Ancient Egypt, Daniel was able to help by guiding him on to the next life. He had enough knowledge to be of assistance. With Ba'al's host, Daniel probably felt he couldn't really help b/c he doesn't know what it's like to go through such hell for so long. So him letting Vala stay behind, who has experience with being a host for an extended period of time, is his way of helping b/c he wouldn't be able to offer the kind of comfort Ba'al's host would need.
