Wanted to do something for Valentine's Day - this is what I could come up with on short notice.

Title: Doing It Wrong
Summary:
Seems they just can't get it right this year.
Rating:
G
Spoilers/Warnings: Mild reference to Quest of Roses, though it is definitely not necessary to read that one.
A/N:
No idea where this one came from...just wanted something for Valentine's, and this is what the brabbits delivered.

She awoke to the same dull ache she'd gone to sleep with and a face full of cute, oversized lifeless eyes staring back at her. Vala frowned and sat up, examining the latest editions to her bed. She hadn't remembered crawling into bed with the little stuffed animal fan club. Unless the concussion she'd come back from their latest mission with was more severe than she'd been told.

Reaching out to the nearest bright heart bearing little animal, she ran her finger down its long pink trunk. Next to it was a purple gorilla. Behind that was a red lion with a sparkly little crown of hearts. The menagerie of toy animals in all the colors of love was vast. Apparently the entire love jungle had invaded the bedroom while she'd been sleeping.

Vala untied the note, attached by bright red ribbon, from around the white and red leopard's paw. Daniel's familiar scrawl greeted her as she unfolded the paper, along with a shower of paper hearts.

'Not even an entire army of gaudy stuffed animals can show how much I love you.'

She smiled, trying to ignore the pain it caused. It was starting to become tradition for Daniel to leave her notes on Valentine's Day. It was adorable and frustrating. She loved that he went through the effort, but most of the time would rather hear it from him directly.

Especially now, when she was sick and aching. Dropping the note back amongst the others, Vala slowly climbed out of bed. She snagged Daniel's ratty cream sweater and pulled it on, hugging her arms tightly around herself as she made her way out of the room.

It didn't take her very long to realize the house was empty. Daniel wasn't there. She wasn't sure where he could be and it upset her. Tears pooling in her eyes, Vala sank back against the kitchen counter and slid to the floor.

She wrapped her arms around her pulled up knees and buried her face there. It did nothing to stem the onslaught of tears.

----

"Vala." The voice was gentle and concerned, luring her away from restless sleep. "Come on, sweetheart. Wake up."

She lifted her head, moaning pitifully as the pain in her head skyrocketed. "Ow." She whimpered, keeping her eyes tightly closed. Her face felt puffy and tight from crying.

A hand came to the back of her neck, massaging gently. "I'm not surprised you're hurting." She winced as another hand brushed over her face, sweeping the hair away. "Why are you sleeping on the kitchen floor?"

Suddenly aggravated by his condescending tone, Vala opened her eyes to glare at Daniel. "You weren't here." He blinked in mild confusion. It only made her more upset. "Why weren't you here?"

"Didn't you see my note?" Daniel asked.

Vala batted at the hand he was still using to run over her hair. "I don't care about stupid little toy animals and how much you love me by paper." The tears were suddenly back. "I want you for Valentine's Day, Daniel. Just you and you're never here for it when I want you. I'm hurt and tired and I need you to be here, but you aren't." She squeezed her eyes shut and sobbed. "You aren't."

"Hey...hey." His voice was enticingly soft and soothing and Vala felt herself being pulled into his embrace. She wanted to fight him, but found she didn't have the strength to. "I'm right here, Vala." Daniel's fingers started brushing through her hair again and she hated how good it felt. "Right here."

"But you weren't." She mumbled into his chest. "I didn't know where you were."

He let out a long sigh. "That's because you didn't read the other note."

Vala frowned and lifted her head off his chest to look at him. "What other note?"

"That one." Daniel pointed to the piece of paper on the fridge. "The one telling you I was out getting dinner." He looked down at her with exasperation and affection. "You told me, while we were trapped offworld, that you wanted Valentine's dinner from that crappy Italian place you love. I ordered from there and had to go pick it up."

She frowned some more. "But...you hate that place."

Daniel gave her an encouraging look. "But I love you. So I figured with you being hurt, and it being Valentine's day, that I'd suffer through crappy Italian to make you happy." He ran the back of his fingers over her cheek. "I didn't want to wake you up, so I wrote a note that I figured you'd see."

"I didn't." Vala whispered, closing her eyes and shaking her head.

"Yeah..." Daniel let out a short, sarcastic laugh and laid a kiss on her forehead. "I got that."

Collapsing back against his chest, Vala nuzzled her nose into his warmth. "We suck at Valentine's Day." She mumbled.

"Speak for yourself." Daniel answered indignantly. "It took me a long time to get all those silly little animals together, and to order out last minute. I deserve some points."

Vala poked his stomach. "Not silly." She argued in defense of her new toy army, even though she'd  just called them stupid herself. "Get lots of points." Despite feeling rather lousy still, Vala shifted and placed a loving kiss against the side of his neck.

She could feel him grin from where she buried her face under his chin. "You are impossible to keep up with." Vala hummed in agreement, fiddling with his tshirt. "So does that mean we can get up off this floor and eat your crappy Italian now?"

"I like the floor idea." Vala said and allowed Daniel to help her to a standing position. "But Daniel..." She bit her lip and gave him a wide-eyed stare as they got upright.

Daniel gave her a curious frown. "Yeah?"

She shook her head and pouted. "I'm not hungry."

Looking to the ceiling, Daniel let out a chuckle and held out his arms in defeat. Vala was confused by such a reaction.

"What?"

He looked back at her, wrapping his outstretched arms around her. "You're right..." She frowned, still confused. "We do suck at Valentine's Day."
