So, for all those interested, here are my pics from the fieldtrip yesterday to Wakulla Springs... I'll provide commentary for all the pics that need it.

This is Old Joe, a gator that used to like in the springs. He was just over 11 ft long, and had been found shot in the head at the bottom of the springs (he'd been shot by pouchers apparently, but had sunk to the bottom before they could get to him). It's difficult to tell from the three pics I have of him, but he was a big guy...

The manatees out in the spring - this is only the second winter that they have stuck around... there'll be more pics coming of them...

The smaller of the herrings - I didn't get a picture of a great blue b/c I KNOW what one looks like thanks to Smurfinator's damn decoy!

Railroad track that lead right into the river...

Wakulla Spring's own Shell Station *snirk*

I got four pictures of this guy because he was in such a perfect 'take a picture of me' pose! He knew he was hot shit! *snirk*

This is an anhinga - for those who don't know about them, they swim under water and catch fish, and when their heads come up out of the water it looks like a snake b/c they have really long skinny necks. They also let their wings dry a particular way - I don't have a pic here, but there will be one with the audobon pics.

This is the palm tree (now dead) used in several of the old Tarzan movies.

And we're back to the manatees...

It really was such a beautiful place. If you're ever in the area, I recommend checking Wakulla Springs out!
