No, no, I totally agree with you on the Daniel thing. The first time my mum saw it she even commented with "Daniel is such a dickhead!" LOL!

Awww, poor Daniel always being the one blamed for his outburst! It's not ENTIRELY his fault he's had relationship drama in the past and is just scared to be hurt so much again! But you can SEE and HEAR how with each horrible thing he says to her that he's trying to convince himself that what he's saying is true - he gets more animated and upset and it's clear it's his way of making himself believe he really feels that way about her. It's a defense mechanism - he's used it on Jack too!

I think of it more as Daniel ranting at himself than at Vala. She was the catalyst, but his emotional baggage had been building up for so much longer. He had to crack. Yes, he's angry at her, but also at himself.

I don't know how many metas and essays I have read on this scene, but it has to be one of the most interesting and complex in the entire series. :D

So my reasoning is yes, Daniel is a bit of a dick when he wants to be, his outburst wasn't warranted - but it had to happen.

Yeah, that's basically what I think too (maybe my last comment didn't show that enough?). Vala was the catalyst for sure, and her actions in that scene are just the right (or would it be wrong?) thing for him b/c he is such an emotional wreck that it sets him off like that. And Daniel can be one insufferable asshole when he's in a mood!

But the beauty of it is he SEES that he did go too far (though it was what VALA needed to let her guard down), yet Vala is still receptive to him afterwards. It's like her way of showing him she understands (kinda like their scene in Daniel's quarters in Ties that Bind).

That shows just how much of a GREAT scene it is in terms of their relationship b/c there are SO many ways to interpret it - the way it went down was so perfect. And it's justifying to know it was ultimately Michael and Claudia's choice because honesty, I can't imagine it going down the way it was originally intended.

It did have to happen - for their relationship to grow and mature, it had to happen!
